When someone first brought up the idea of using glass straws instead of regular plastic straws I will admit I wasn't sold. Obviously I'd use it mostly while eating out which means it would be in my purse, but how do you keep it from breaking? And once you use it, how do you keep it clean? The whole idea seemed a little ridiculous to me. But I really do need to learn that in this journey to being green you should never turn your nose up at anything! I finally decided to give glass straws a try and recently received my GlassDharma Glass Straws. I am officially hooked.
GlassDharma glass straw and held it in my hand this question suddenly seemed so silly! They are not made from weak, fragile glass. These straws are strong and durable. They also come in a small box that makes transporting them in a purse or bag extremely easy, safe, and convenient. The second concern I had was their cleanliness. Again, once I learned more about glass straws this concern was such a non-issue. GlassDharma glass straws are dishwasher safe and they can also be easily cleaned with a stainless steel cleaning brush with medical grade nylon bristles (available as an accessory on the website for just $5 and also a brush is included in most of the "straw sets"!). But mostly I find that running them through really hot soapy water is enough to clean the straws well enough between use and then running them through a dishwasher once a week ensures no built-up bacteria!
So if those were your concerns when it comes to using glass straws- stop worrying! These are not issues at all and I think you find that using glass straws can actually be enjoyable. I have four GlassDharma straws now and find myself using them all of the time, even at times when I normally would not use a straw like when drinking out of my glasses at home. When I have guests over I like to serve them drinks with a GlassDharma glass straw and see their reactions, which so far have been nothing but positive!
My current straw line-up:
Beautiful Bends 9.5mm x 9" ($8.50): This is my go-to straw when at home since the bend allows the straw to rest nicely against a tall or short glass without tipping the glass over. It also has the perfect width for my preferences.
Simple Elegance 12mm x 9" ($8.50): This is my guest straw because, to me, it's a bit too wide at 12mm. I much prefer the 9.5mm width personally. Though if you like wider straws this one would be great to carry around with you as it will reach down nicely into a fast food drinking glass! Get the extra long Simple Elegance straws (10") if you like ordering larger sized drinks!
Decorative Dots 7mm x 6.25" in Red ($8.00): This would be the straw I would recommend for a kid. It's short so fits well in smaller plastic cups and kid's sized fast food cups. The decorative dots are fun and add just a little bit more to the glass straws that keep kids interested. With this straw, since it's so narrow at only 7mm I highly recommend you pick up a Cleaning Brush for it because it can be a bit more difficult to clean.
Decorative Dots 9.5mm x 9" in Blue ($9.00): My personal favorite straw and the one that is currently in my purse and ready to go! I love the 9.5mm width, the colorful dots add a bit of fun to it, the length is great at 9" for the size of my re-usable cup I use when I eat out, and I find it to be extremely easy to clean when on the go even though I don't have a cleaning brush with it. I plan on picking up more of these soon to keep on hand for when I have a dinner party and several guests over at once!
So why am I including this in my Green Holiday Gift Guide? Well these straws make the BEST eco-friendly stocking stuffer- both for kids and adults! They are sustainable, reusable, and perfect for both hot and cold drinks! The price is right considering how much use you can get out of GlassDharma glass straws and you can get the Decorative Dots variety and personalize the color for each person on your list!
What I Love: I love how GlassDharma glass straws instantaneously sold this critic on glass straws! I love using them! They are easy to carry around, easy to use, and easy to clean. Top that off with their eco-friendliness and afford-ability and you have a product I absolutely love!
What I Don't Love: There's nothing that I don't love, though having more fun designs might be nice, especially when buying these straws as a gift for children.
